Last week we finished our science unit about apples by discussing how heat causes change - we made applesauce! We tasted it and graphed our results and everyone liked it.

This week, in science we learned about pumpkins. We studied the life cycle of a pumpkin plant, and did some fun experiments. With a mini pumpkin, we checked to see if it would sink or float, we weighed it using a balance scale, and we counted the lines around it. With a larger pumpkin, we checked to see if it would sink or float - that surprised some students! We estimated how many seeds were in the pumpkin, then we scooped out the inside and counted the seeds. We counted by 10's and discovered that there were 202! I am going to roast them this week-end and bring them to school so we can taste pumpkin seeds.

In math, we continued creating patterns.

In writing, we are working on adding more detail and thoughts to our stories. We are also trying to spell sight words correctly. We are still using beginning sounds and ending sounds to record our words.
In reading, we are able to read independently for 25 minutes. That is great! I am able to have mini reading conferences during this time. We have also been studying about Traditional Tales (folktales and fairytales). We discussed the characters, character actions,  settings, problems, solutions and look for repeating phrases. We will continue this study next week also by reading different stories.

Now that the weather is getting cooler, please remember to label your child's coat or jacket. It makes it so much easier to return it to your child if a name is inside!

Please remember too that Monday is a regular school day, children should wear normal clothing - costumes are not allowed in school.
