Wow, last week was busy! We had parent conferences, a field trip and science day!
Thank you for attending your parent conference. The students were thrilled to share their journals and read their published book. Some students were amazed at their own growth as they tried to go back and read their beginning of the year journals.
Thank you also for parents that volunteered on the field trip. It was a fun day and the students enjoyed the activities.
Science day was great! We started our day at the petting zoo seeing goats and horses. Then we were able to walk through a butterfly house. We saw caterpillars, plants, chrysalises, and butterflies. It was amazing! We had a lesson on certain parts of the plants that we eat, which fit in perfectly with our current unit of study.
Field day will be on Friday, May 18th. Please remember to have your child wear tennis shoes.
We will continue our study of plants and taking care of our garden these last few weeks.

I hope you all had a relaxing long week-end. The students seemed to have enjoyed the break - many exciting journal entries!
Parents, please take a few minutes to complete the RRISD parent climate survey. The district would love to have more input this year. I have included the link:

Also, just a reminder that field trip permission slips are due next week. The field trip is scheduled for May 3rd. Thank you for those that have already returned the forms. If you are planning on volunteering, which means chaperoning children other than your own, you must fill out the volunteer application form. If you click on the link below, it will take you to the application.
Our district parent conference day is Wednesday, May 2nd. That is an early release day. Look for a sign up sheet in your child's folder. I will be sending it home one day this week.

Welcome back! Hopefully, everyone had a fun and resting break. The students seemed happy to be back and glad to see their friends.
Our field trip is coming up on May 3rd. We will be going to the Elgin Tree farm for our study of plants. Look for information in your child's folder on Thursday. The Spring Carnival is this Friday, March 23rd at 5:00 pm. It will be so much fun! We created a class art project that will be auctioned off during the carnival. It is very unique. You will have to stop by to see it for yourself in the library!

We will be switching lunch times again with 4th grade next Tuesday, March 27th and Wednesday, March 28th due to STAAR testing. Please send in an extra snack for your child since we will be having lunch at 12:00. Since 4th and 5th graders will be testing, visitors will not be allowed on campus on those dates.
On April 2nd, there will be an ADHD presentation for parents in the library from 6:30 - 8:30. Advice and helpful information will be discussed.
These last 9 weeks of school will speed by! It is hard to believe that the year will soon be over. The students have certainly matured since the beginning of school.

Last Tuesday was a lovely day - it was Valentine's day! The students opened their Valentine bags after lunch. They were very excited and loved opening their cards. What fun it was to see them thanking each other for their cards. The Valentine party was a big success. Thank you to all of our faithful volunteers for helping at each station. Also, thank you to everyone that sent in the party donations. The students had an enjoyable time.
Last week, we studied about rocks. We discussed the properties of rocks; size, color, texture and luster. We sorted rocks by size and color. We used hand lenses to observe the rocks and recorded our observations. We also found out that not all rocks will sink in water! Pumice will float. We noticed that some rocks change colors if they got wet. As we listened to the story, The Crow and the Pitcher, we noticed that rocks take up space. We added rocks to a container of water to see that the water level would rise.
Units of study for the next couple of weeks:

February 8th - continued
For some reason this part did not get posted with the previous post.
Last Wednesday was the 100th Day of school. We had a big 100 banner stretched across our doorway that the students had to crawl through - that was fun! We also celebrated by making a 100 piece snack, drawing 100 gumballs, and racing to get to the number 100 on a hundreds chart.

We are beginning our unit on rocks, sand and soil. We will be talking about the properties of rocks... size, color, shape, and texture. We will discuss water clarity and the characteristics of sand and soil.
We will be delving into media literacy as well. We will be looking at commercials and advertisements to see how print, colors, sounds, and movement influence people to buy a product.
In math, we will be creating and studying graphs.
New reading books will be sent home this week since I have completed the mid-year district assessments.
